Like anything “lucky” or “powerful”, it’s the state of mind in which the “lucky gift” was given to you. If I were to hand you anything, ANYTHING right now, a penny, a baseball, a cat (lol), and told you that I’ve had it for years, it’s my lucky such and such and has won me games and got me laid and found me money, you would believe it based on my stories and your reaction. Another reason is tradition. Jade has been traditionally known to bring better luck if it was given to you and better luck if you never take it off. You have to break it off accidentally; purposely would be bad luck. That’s all it is to me, just a state of mind. Anything can be lucky if you believe in it enough. Edit (example because of Starry): See? I’m wearing a Jade bracelet right now that was given to me and can’t take off. What did she say just then? It’s super lucky, right? Because she that, I’m now reinforcing the good luck to manifest itself into super good luck because I’m wearing Jade. It’s that simple, people. It’s amazing what the mind can do. 
I have a fetish for semi-precious gem stones. Jade is the most commonly known gem stone for luck (thanks china!) Next I would say Hematite (calms the mind, particularly good for Geminis). Citrine is good for improving communication. You have your all purpose stone which is amethyst and quartz. You can program them babies to do anything you want. I am starting to develop a love of the Herkemeir diamond and Lapiz Luzi (both good for strength and mental clarity).
gems and crystals are perfect for storing certain types of energies and they can also affect energy fields Thats as far as I know….maybe someday I’ll learn more
